Red Kite Photography Workshop with Paul Miguel

Red Kites were released at Harewood and Bramham in Yorkshire around 15 years ago. Since then they have spread rapidly and are now seen regularly around Leeds.

This was the second of Paul's workshops which Lyn and I had attended - me as photographer, Lyn as my assistant who has become very adept over the years at handing me whatever is needed from my camera bag: filters, lenses, remote release cables - she is VERY good :-)

Paul's expertise and ability to explain exactly what camera settings he would use for bird in flight photography - and perhaps most importantly why he prefers such settings was very much appreciated for although I have tried this sort of thing before, I am the first to admit that no matter how much I know and understand, I can always learn more and Paul certainly knows his stuff.

Weather conditions were dry and although not exactly warm, temperatures were high enough for us to enjoy the three hours outside without the need for gloves and winter coats. Saying that, it was a pretty grey day although we DID get a short period of breaking cloud at one point which relieved a fairly monotonous sky.

For most of the time. Red Kites circled above us, diving now and again for food on the ground below but as this was not so often, almost unpredicatble and VERY fast, I failed miserably to get any decent shots of this activity so I will HAVE to go back and have another go! Thanks go to Paul for the knowledge he passed on and his friendly, unassuming personality - top man!
